  A funny thing happened

1978 was the year of Ally's Army, the World Cup in Argentina and Andy Cameron's immortal lyrics to the Scotland World Cup song:

"We're here to show the world that we're going to do or die,
Coz England canny dae it coz they didnae qualify".

Oh how we laughed.

The ball is in the back of net and the Dutch are falling over
1978 was also the year that Archie Gemmill scored a goal against Holland in the World Cup. Not just any old goal. But one that FIFA has nominated as the seventh best goal ever scored in any World Cup.

But then that big bastard Rep hit a beauty from 25 yards and it was back to reality. Out in the first round.

FirstFoot contends that it may have been the seventh best goal in any World Cup, but there are at least seven goals, scored by Scotland, which are better:

Any hint of a theme is purely deliberate.
